Who is eligible
- The spouse of a Singapore Citizen or Singapore PR
- Unmarried children below 21 years old born within a legal marriage to, or legally adopted by, a Singapore Citizen or PR
The Singaporean or PR spouse or parent acts as the sponsor. Their income, housing and ability to support the family are part of the assessment.
What ICA looks at for family applications
Being married to a Singaporean or PR does not guarantee PR. ICA also considers the sponsor’s ability to support the family, how long the couple has been married, whether they have children, and the applicant’s own profile.
Couples who have recently married, or where the sponsor’s income is modest, may first be granted a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) or LTVP+. PR can then be applied for later.
PR for children
Children born overseas to a Singaporean parent may be eligible for citizenship by descent rather than PR, depending on the parent’s circumstances. Children of PRs, or stepchildren and adopted children, usually apply for PR.
Sons who become PRs will be liable for National Service when they turn 18. We explain this clearly before you apply so your family can decide with full information.

Frequently asked questions
How long after marriage can I apply for PR?
You can apply at any time after marriage, but longer marriages and families with children usually present stronger applications. We advise on timing during your assessment.
What is LTVP+?
LTVP+ is an enhanced Long-Term Visit Pass for foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens. It gives longer validity and some healthcare and employment benefits, and is often a step before PR.
Can my child get PR if I am a PR myself?
Yes. Unmarried children under 21 of a PR can be included in your application or apply separately with you as sponsor.
