Singapore citizenship

Singapore citizenship applications for Permanent Residents

Citizenship is the final step for PRs who are committed to Singapore for life. It also means giving up your current nationality, so we make sure you decide with full information.

  • Spouses of Singapore Citizens
  • Renunciation guidance

There is no citizenship by investment in Singapore

Singapore does not sell citizenship. You first need to become a Permanent Resident, live in Singapore as a PR, and then apply for citizenship like any other PR. Approval is at the government’s discretion.

Who can apply

ApplicantGeneral requirement
Permanent ResidentAt least 21 years old and a PR for at least 2 years
Spouse of a Singapore CitizenA PR, and married to the citizen for at least 2 years
Children of Singapore CitizensUnmarried children under 21 born within a legal marriage to, or legally adopted by, a citizen
Aged parents of Singapore CitizensA PR who is the parent of a Singapore Citizen

Meeting these conditions makes you eligible to apply. It does not guarantee approval. Many applicants wait longer than 2 years to build a stronger profile.

Renouncing your current nationality

Singapore does not allow dual citizenship for adults. If approved, you must renounce your current nationality within the time ICA gives you.

Chinese citizens: China does not recognise dual nationality either, and a Chinese citizen who settles abroad and acquires a foreign nationality loses Chinese nationality. This affects your hukou, property and travel arrangements in China, so plan ahead.

Thai citizens: Thai law treats dual nationality differently, but Singapore still requires you to renounce your Thai nationality as a condition of Singapore citizenship.

Many clients decide to remain PRs for this reason. We help you weigh the benefits of citizenship against what you give up.

Take independent legal and tax advice in your home country before you renounce your nationality.

National Service

Male citizens and second-generation male PRs are liable for National Service. Sons who become citizens with their parents will generally have to serve. Consider this carefully for your family.
